  • The war of 1812 was cause mainly by the impressment of British sailors who were being taken by the British. When James Madison took office he tried to make a new offer to stop trading with the enemy and the British agreed but continued stealing British sailors. Madison tried to believe the British but thought about going against what George Washington said about isolationism.
  • sea battles
  • As settlers were trying to settle into Ohio and Mississippi they were making the Indians retreat from their home. One day a Indian chief and his brother tried to get all the Indians in Mississippi to unite. The Indiana governor fought back and won. later they found out that the Indians had British guns.
  • the battle of new orleans
  • in 1814 another British army invaded Washington D.C. They set ablaze multiple public homes. They also set fire to the capitol and the white house. The president had to flee, scared for his life.
  • results of the war
  • In September, 1813, a American commander who goes by the name, Oliver hazard Perry along with his crew successfully captured 6 British ships on lake Erie. In doing so, it enabled William Henry Harrison to get into Canada and capture a British major in battle. Here comes December and the British force the Americans back over the border.
  • A British fleet had just given up to the U.S. after the battle of lake Champlain. The British would send a note to the British commanders who were fighting in the U.S. but it did not get there in time. new Orleans was defended general Jackson and a militia consisting of 7,000 troops with a few African Americans, Indians, and pirates.2 weeks earlier a treaty was signed but did not reach new Orleans in time.
  • After the war was done both sides thought they had succeeded. the treaty of Ghent resolved none of the issues that led to war instead impressment and ship seizures faded away. The war of 1812 had important effects such as it weakened Indian resistance in the northwest territory. Second it made people in the U.S. think it was the second war to declare independence. Finally, the war had political effects such as the fed. party was so hurt, it would fade away.
