The media contributes to these stereotypes, and they clearly adversely affect Black women
Statistically, Black women are at higher risk of mental health issues. Trauma stemming from these stereotypes put them at higher risk.
Let's not forget how Black women are always expected to take on overwhelming roles and be saviors which puts an unnecessary amount of weight on their shoulders.
The "Mammy" figure that's been used in the media since the late 1800s, still contributes to these narratives placed on Black women. We're supposed to docile caregivers.
Yes! This is due to the way we're always portrayed as maternal figures or caregivers. Black women are just expected to save and take care of everyone else before ourselves.
Black women have had to bear hardships systemically, emotionally, and physically due to the impact of the media's portrayal of Black women. We need more positive representation of Black women to change the way Black women are perceived in society.
