  • Wes & Viola Are Called to School
  • These kids need more structure. They both need to be suspended from school.
  • We have a zero tolerance policy for fighting here.
  • Principal Lazo, I am sure the kids were just playing. A punishment is unnecessary.
  • Wes & Viola Do Not See Eye-to-Eye
  • No, a they need to understand that actions have consequences!
  • Folks, we have to find a middle ground.
  • A punishment does not make it better, they will just do it again.
  • Wes & Viola Find Common Ground
  • In the army, if we messed up, we had to take whatever consequence came with it.
  • Well now, this is middle school NOT the army.
  • They are just kids! You can't...wait... did you say you were in the army?
  • Wes & Viola Resolve Conflict
  • Yes! 20-year veteran. Do you have a connection to the army, as well?
  • See what happens when we find common ground!
  • My husband is currently overseas in the Army. Now I understand why discipline means so much to you now!
  • Wes and Viola's kids are both 7th graders at the same middle school. The two parents have never met before, and seem completely different... or are they?
  • Story #2: Charlene & Joy
  • Charlene & Joy
  • Wes and Viola are called to their children's middle school because their kids decided to get in a fight at recess. This is the first time Les and Viola are meeting. The principal wants them to talk about what happened and find an agreeable punishment for the kids.
  • Charlene & Joy Take Their Dogs to the Park
  • Her dog looks kind of mean... I'm worried.
  • Wes is a 20-year army veteran and believes discipline is the key to success. Viola is a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids and believes that strict rules make kids rebel. It is clear that Les and Viola have different opinions on how the kids should be punished for fighting.
  • Charlene & Joy Do Not See Eye-To-Eye
  • No he's not! He is a puppy, they are just playing with the toy!
  • Initially, Viola thought Wes just a strict grouch of a parent, and Wes thought Viola was way too easy-going and let her kids do whatever they want! But then...
  • Charlene & Joy Find Common Ground
  • In our home country, Jamaica, he plays like this with the other dogs all the time...
  • Viola and Les realize they have more in common than they thought and that they are not much different at all. Now, they each understand where the other person is coming frombetter. They eventually agreed on a way to hold the kidsaccountable, which means... conflict resolved!
  • Charlene & Joy Resolve Conflict
  • Yep, Montego Bay born and raised! It is very laid back there. Where are you from?
  • Charlene and Joy are both taking their dogs to the park today. The two young ladies have never met before, and seem completely different... or are they?
  • Charlene and Joy are at the dog park and their dogs begin to play together. Naturally, both ladies just sit back and keep to themselves.
  • Be a good boy, Rex!
  • Joy thinks that Charlene is allowing her dog Rex, play too rough with her dog. Joy get's upset, which makes Charlene upset because she knows Rex is just playing with his new friend.
  • OMG! Your dog is going to hurt my dog! He is being so rough!
  • Charlene explains to Joy that where she is from, it is normal for dogs to play like this. Joy does not agree with her. But then....
  • My dog does not usually play like this... Wait, you said you are from Jamaica?
  • Charlene and Joy realize they have more in common than they thought and who would have guessed they are both from Jamaica! Now, Joy understands better where Charlene was coming from and eventually was ok that their dogs were just playing, which means... conflict resolved!
  • I am from Montego Bay, too! But I left a long time ago. I understand now, things are so much laid-back there.
  • Story #3: Cori & Liana

  • Cori & Liana Study in the College Library
  • It's so hard to make friends in college. I don't feel like anyone gets me.
  • I really am struggling with this assignment, and his loud music is not making this any easier!
  • Cori & Liana Do Not See Eye-to-Eye
  • Excuse me? Would you be able to help me with my assignment? I am really struggling.
  • Sorry, I don't think I am the right person for that...

  • ...It's not that I don't want to help, it's just... I'm a first generation college student and I don't feel confident.
  • Is it because of my Hijab? Maybe he just thinks I'm stupid... being a first gen student is so tough.
  • Cori & Liana Resolve Conflict
  • You don't know how I relieved I am to meet someone similar to me. Sorry if I seemed a shy or stuck up.
  • Wait, did you say you are first generation? Me too! I totally get how you feel.
  • Cori and Liana are both first-generation college students studying in the library. The students have never met before, and seem completely different... or are they?
  • Cori and Liana are in the library doing schoolwork. Naturally, both students are shy and keep to themselves because they don't want to be perceived as naive.
  • Liana thinks that Cori may just be another privileged student who just doesn't want to help her with her assignment because of how she looks when he says he cannot help her. Cori does not want Liana to see him as stupid.
  • Despite Liana's judgment, Cori explains to Liana that he is first-generation and that he is afraid she will see him as stupid if he can't be helpful. Liana was upset. But then...
  • Cori and Liana realize they have more in common than they thought as First-generation college students. After Liana and Cori talked about their shared experiences, she understands more now that Cori was just shy and not being stuck up, which means... conflict resolved!
