- When Owl-eyes, Nick, and Jordan go to Gatsby's library, Owl-eyes says, "What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop too- didn't cut the pages" (Fitzgerald 46). Owl-eyes notices something about these books; they have never been read, yet there are so many and they look all brand new. The authors purpose of this scene is to make the reader question what Gatsby is truly like.
- In the car, Gatsby explains to Nick about his past and Nick questions him until Gatsby smiles and Nick says, "He lifted up the words and nodded at them-- with his smile" (Fitzgerald 66). The authors purpose of this scene is to get the theme of appearance vs reality across to the reader by using Gatsby's smile as a synecdoche. When Gatsby smiles it makes him seem sure that what he is saying, is true.
- At the end of chapter eight, Wilson shoots Gatsby, and kills him. He put him on a raft in the pool and, "Little ripples that were hardly the shadows of the waves , the laden mattress moved irregularly down the pool" (Fitzgerald 162). Wilson then shoots himself. The authors purpose of this scene is to show that even though Gatsby did not kill Myrtle, The poor always gets blamed, and punished with consequences.
