Ada is a cripple and her hating mother wants to send her brother tho the country because of bombs. she learns to walk over the summer and escapes with Jamie. they end up dumped at Susan's house who supposedly doesn't want children! Ada ends up making friends with the iron-faced women's daughter the honorable Margret Thornton or Maggie.
