- There were multiple causes of World War II, economic conflict is one of the major reasons. The Great Depression is one of the reasons it happened. After World War I, Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles, blamed Germany for starting it, thus they faced backlash, they were forced to pay reparations, they were forced to surrender territories and disarm their own army. When the Weimar Republic began delaying its payments, France and Belgium invaded Germany's coal industry. The fallout of war is never good, as seen from World War I towards Germany and the Great Depression affected the entire world's economy.
