- In the beginning of the play Katherine is considered a shrew and because no one will marry her, her sister cannot get married until Katherine does.

- Finally, someone is willing to marry Kate; Petruchio a man looking for a wealthy woman agrees to marry her despite her personality. At first she is brutal to him, argumentative, and rude. However, he has a plan to break her, by depriving her of food and sleep and with reverse psychology she changes.
- The audience sees the final transformation when they return to Kate's home town. Her younger sister has been married and all the husbands enter a bet to see who's wife is the most submissive. When Petruchio wins everyone is amazed. What is even more strange is that Kate sticks up for her husband and states that a wife should treat her husband like a subject treats their king.
