- The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that was created by Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas. The act allowed territories to vote whether they wanted to be a free state or a slave state. Anyone who lived in these territories could vote but proslavery and anti slavery groups rushed supporters into Kansas. Many groups were armed which lead to violent conflicts and about 800 slavery supporters burned down parts of Kansas.

- The Raid on Harpers Ferry aka John Browns raid was led by John brown. He led a large group of men, both white and African American, on a raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. His goal was to steal weapons and ammunition from an arsenal so he can lead an anti-slavery movement. But John Brown was quickly captured, tried for treason, and eventually executed.

- In 1860, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John bell and John Breckenridge ran for president. Lincoln stated that slavery should be left alone in the states it was active in. This made many Southerners believe that if Lincoln was elected president then slaves would fight back and slavery would be removed from the United States. Lincoln then surprisingly got elected president and the 11 states got mad when he was elected. Later on the 11 states seceded from the United States.
