Serena Jameka Williams was born September 26, 1981 to Richard Williams and Oracene Price in Saginaw, Michigan. The family had five daughters. Venus and Serena were the youngest. Serena started learning tennis at just 3 years old!As a young girl, Serena moved with her family to Compton, California and later West Palm Beach, Florida. She and her older sister Venus were homeschooled and coached in tennis by their father.
Serena and Venus were both stylish, powerful, athletic, and formidable opponents on the tennis court. They were very close and even lived together while they trained for many years. In 1995, at age 14, Serena became a professional tennis player, and at the 1999 U.S. Open, Serena won her first Grand Slam! In the 2000 Olympic games, Serena and Venus played doubles and won their first gold medal. The Williams sisters dominated the world of tennis!In 2002, Serena won the French Open, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon defeating her sister Venus in the finals of each tournament.
Venus and Serena were excellent tennis players from an early age. Their father was determined that his daughters succeed and the young girls practiced for hours a day. Serena ranked number 1 in ages 10 and under in Florida!
In 2011, Serena had a health scare with a blood clot in her lung but she recovered and didn't let that stop her from playing. In her tennis career, Serena has won 23 Grand Slam titles, 14 doubles titles, and four Olympic gold medals!

Serena has been called the best tennis player of all time. But, there's more:In 2008, Serena established the Serena Williams Foundation to help at risk youth. In 2009, Serena and Venus became part owners of the Miami Dolphins football team, becoming the first African American women to do so. Serena has appeared in movies and television, developed her own clothing line Aneres, and was the first African American athlete to appear on the cover of Vogue.
Serena is a legend in her own time. She was named one of the Top 25 Most Intriguing People by People magazine and one of the country's 50 Most Inspiring African Americans by Essence magazine.In 2017, Serena married Alexis Ohanian and the two have a daughter named Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. Serena has already started teaching young Olympia how to play tennis!
