  • This is George.
  • George uses the manure from his farm animals to fertilize his crops.
  • He also composts his leftover food scraps.
  • George's farm uses its own plumbing so his family used to use an outhouse. Now they use a septic system.
  • The water in the river near George's house is clean.
  • His family stays warm using firewood from nearby.
  • Over time, George expands his farm.
  • He also gets neighbors.
  • Both of these are great things for George and his family because they bring more money and more opportunities.
  • Unfortunately, they also come with some challenges too.
  • The people in the city have started using landfills to get rid of their trash and food waste.
  • Another challenge is the increased use of non-renewable energy, like coal and natural gas. These also release greenhouse gases.
  • Greenhouse gases aren't all bad. Our atmosphere protects us, both from the extreme rays of the sun and the cold of space.
  • But there's a balance. Too much greenhouse gas leads to global warming.
  • George sees these problems and he’s concerned. But what can he do?
  • Then George reads about anaerobic digestion.
  • Human waste (poop)
  • Manure
  • Food scraps
  • Microbes
  • The microbes work together in a community and produce biogas.

  • Digested solid
  • Biogas
  • The end products are biogas, digested solids, and digested liquids.
  • Biogas is mostly methane gas, or natural gas. But, there's an important difference. Biogas is renewable.
  • Renewable energy means that we won't run out of it because it comes from something we will continue to have.
  • It may be a solution!
  • The crops can be fertilized still, but the water and air are cleaner. George can use the manure to heat his own farm. And, he may even be able to help his neighbors.
  • Plus, it cuts down on greenhouse gases going to the atmosphere.
