- In the 1500s, the Roman Catholic Church was super powerful and controlled what their followers, or protestants, could do. The church owned approximately 1/3 of the land in Europe.

- The pope competed with the kings for power and would excommunicate them if they went against the popes commands.
- The Roman Catholic Church sold indulgences. John Hus very much disagreed with the sale of indulgences.
- Martin Luther wrote "95 Thesis" which was 95 arguments against indulgences.
- In 1522, Luther traveled to Wittenberg Castle Church and began to organize a new branch of Christianity that became known as Lutheranism.
