  • JJ Thompson, 1856-1940, was the English scientist who discovered the electron and developed what we know as the plumb pudding Model , and won the nobel prize for physics for research on electrical conductivity in gases
  • Why are atoms the way they are?
  • Thompson used the experiment with the cathode ray tube which exposed the negativly charged particles we know as electrons.
  • There are negativley charged particles in the ATOM!?
  • What could be the explanation as to why they are doing such a thing?
  • After discovering the electron, Thompson understood there were negative electrical charges and developed a model resembling a plumb pudding with the electrons within the atom.
  • This is what it must look like
  • Ernest Rutherford, 1871-1937, was a New Zealand-born British scientist who discovered a positively charged nucleus through the Gold Foil Experiment and disproved the Billiard Ball Theory by showing atoms could be broken down, and was the first person from Oceania to win the Nobel Prize
  • I wonder what would happen if we fired alpha particles through a gold foil sheet
  • Rutherford set up his famed gold foil experiment, and fired the particles but discovered that some went straight through to the other side, some bounced of the foil and into the sides of the container, and some came straight back from where he fired them
  • Rutherford discovered that the atoms are mostly empty space so some passed right through the foil, others hit and came right back to where they were shot from because there was something in the middle that collided, and some deflected to the sides because the nucleus was positively charged.
  • This means there is a positively charged nucleus in the center of the atom, so small the atom can pass through things.
