Öykü Penceresi Metni

  • One day when Bobby Joe was admiring his factories...
  • Hello, Earth person! I am Green-Man, watcher of Earth.
  • Well hello, Green-Man. My name is Bobby Joe.
  • Oh, thank you. I've actually started this company by mysel-
  • I've seen the positive economic impact your factories have for this country.
  • Oh yeah?! What kind of negative impacts?!
  • However, I've also seen the even greater, negative impact your factories have on planet Earth.
  • The burning of the fossil fuels from your factories negatively affects the carbon cycle which also affects the plants and animals on Earth.
  • Okay, uh.. what is the carbon cycle?
  • Please follow me into my spaceship.
  • The carbon cycle is one of the biogeochemical cycles. The cycle shows the conversion of carbon into many forms which allows carbon to travel from the atmosphere into organisms on Earth and then back to the atmosphere to be a cycle.
  • So how does having more carbon affect the ecosystem negatively?
  • When humans burn fossil fuels, carbon is released to the atmosphere faster than the rate carbon is being removed.
  • Before humans became more technologically advanced, the carbon levels were normal, making the carbon cycle balanced.
  • Humans have been burning fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution in 1760. Statistics show that in the early 1700s, the level of carbon dioxide on Earth was around 280 ppm. Recently in 2018, the level of carbon dioxide had been increased to 407.7 ppm.
  • The increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to many problems. If humans continue to burn fossil fuels at this rate: animals, including us, can be harmed by pollution, climate change will occur, and the amount of fossil fuels on Earth will also decrease.
  • What's wrong with the climate changing?
  • Climate change is a very important topic. It could ruin the biotic interactions.
  • What are the biotic interactions?
  • One example is the food chain.
  • Polar BearHeterotroph0.1% energy
  • Arctic FoxHeterotroph1% energy
  • LichenAutotroph 100% energy
  • LemmingHeterotroph10% energy
  • This is a food chain of an arctic tundra ecosystem. This shows the energy transfer between each species.
  • In the arctic tundra ecosystem, the arctic fox is a keystone species. It is the prey to many animals such as polar bears, wolves, kittiwakes, and snowy owls. Therefore if the arctic fox decreased, the population of those animals will also decrease.
  • One example of climate change is global warming. It affects the arctic tundra ecosystems. The ice in the arctic melts which shrinks the arctic foxes habitat. This leads to a decrease in its population.
  • So the arctic tundra ecosystems are endangered because the polar bears, wolves, kittiwakes, and snowy owls get energy from the arctic fox.
  • Yes exactly. This is why I came to you to ask for help.
  • You can change the way you produce energy. Instead of burning fossil fuels, you can use solar and wind energy. Because you own one of the biggest energy producing companies on Earth, when you start to change, it will raise awareness to this problem.
  • Eh, I don't know. It's really expensive to make this change...
  • Another solution to this is simply by raising awareness to change human people's lives alone. People can start to use less private ways of transportation to lessen the amount of fossil fuels we use.
  • That sounds like an easier approach.
  • I will start to use more public transportations and I will also tell my friends and family about this!
  • Sounds good!
  • In the future, I will also try and change how I produce energy. Thank you Green-Man!
  • Farewell Bobby Joe, I have faith in you to make a change and good luck for the future of your company!
