  • Why are they protesting?
  • Corruption. We, Illinois, are the most corrupt state in the entire nation, and this is a problem. The first Illinois corruption trial took place in 1869. That's where it all started.
  • But why are you guys so corrupt?
  • Since the founding of Chicago and our state, we have had people of power looking out for themselves, and as a result of a few loopholes, “politicians” are campaigning with great promises that they fail to fulfill, just so they could get the money.
  • There have been 891 convictions of corruption in Illinois from 2000 to 2020.
  • Some of this corruption has come from the fact that Chicago is a big booming city that has lots of money, whereas in states like Kentucky and Minnesota are more farming states, leaving less room for corruption to take place.
  • As Kent Renfield says, (political science professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield “This is a state where there’s been stuff to fight about, there was a lot of corruption back in the economic development of Illinois. There were opportunities for the private sector to get advantages from government and for government to leverage its power.”
  • If this has been going for so long, why don’t you change the system?
  • Since the Civil War, there have been criminal-political alliances, where you couldn’t tell who was the crook and who was the politician. It also helped fuel the rise of political party machines.
  • These political party machines were never taken down because during the influx of immigrants, these machines helped them get jobs and homes in the community, whose gratefulness came back in the poll numbers.
  • The rise of the Mob in the prohibition era also resulted in Illinois, and especially Chicago staying corrupt as a result of the Mob paying the police off, and while they killed at night, figures like Al Capone had an impact on the government.
  • Sometimes, people have to vote for the least corrupt politician, which eventually takes a toll on the state, which impacts the nation.
