- There are things listed that are essential to human survival. It is comparing two things entirely different to plainly contrast with the emotion of love. The speaker is trying to reduce the importance of love by comparing it to things people cannot survive without. She writes about how love will not heal our sicknesses and it's not all we need in life. She minimizes the value of love and states many times throughout this poem that it cannot profusely sustain life. Her use of imagery gives us comprehension the insignificance of love in order to live.

- There are important things that love brings to us and the further you are away from it, the closer you are to death. This line contradicts all the lines from the poem, but it is to show that although love is not needed to survive, it isn't something you should avoid. There is an understanding the speaker realizes that love may have some value, especially since many people keep an on death because of absence of love. It makes the reader question that maybe love does have some value considering the fact so many people are risking their life to achieve it. She builds up to the theme by implying that life might not be worth living if she does not experience love.

- After the Turn, the speaker realizes that maybe love does have some value. It seems as though the speaker refuses to let go of the past memory and doesn't want to surrender even when they feel heartache. Even if she dies from hunger or thirst, her life would not be worth living if she didn't have love present in her life. Although love serves no purpose materialistically, without it, man can never become devoted with the beauty in the world, life.
- A rhyming pattern is present in this poem. It is ABABCDCDEFEFGG. The contrast is present in this poem, and it is used to diminish the value of love by comparing it to things that are essential in life in order to live. One specific example is "Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath". Alliteration is also included in this poem and it's shown through the repetition of "not" and "nor". This is to exaggerate what love cannot do and that its incapable of providing the necessities of life.
- The Turn seen in line 8 focalizes the poem. Before this element, the poem starts off by saying the unimportance love is to people compared to our needs in life and provides a negative definition of what love is not. The speaker states that love cannot give you oxygen in your lungs or provide a roof to protect you from the rain. However, after the Turn, the speaker realizes that love is a luxury. This sudden switch of opinion about love makes the reader take the time to recognize the irony of the difference in her original statement. The comparison the speaker initiates of loves lacking to death provide the reader with the image that love can also bring life. She twists the poem by making you think love is nothing but really it can be the complete opposite.
- The speaker faces a difficult time in her life and the thought of selling their love for peace crosses her mind. But she comes to the realization that she does not want to no matter how much she desires to. She wants to hang on to the love she experienced. The speaker would not trade love for peace that will sustain her body because without love, you have nothing but life and living.

- Theme: Love may seem like a foolish and irrational concept that cannot possible be required to live, yet it can give you someone strength and hope in times of despair.
