- He was born Siddhartha Gautama about 2,500 years ago. His birthplace is now in Nepal, a country in Asia. His father was a king. A holy man said Siddhartha would be a great leader. Siddartha means a person who reaches his goal. Siddartha's father wanted to keep his son from seeing suffering in the world so he grew up in a palace built just for him.
- The prince became an adult but did not know much about the world. One day he went outside his palace walls. He saw a very old man. Siddhartha was confused. The carriage driver said that all people grow old. He began taking more trips outside his palace. Siddhartha saw a sick man, a dead person and an ascetic. An ascetic is someone who does not own anything. They live on very little food and water. The driver explained that the ascetic did not want to be afraid of death and suffering.Siddartha began to think. He was 29 years old and the next day, he left his kingdom, his wife and son to have an ascetic life. He wanted to end suffering.He met other ascetics who listened to what he had to say. Yet he could not give them all the answers, so he tried harder to understand.A young girl offered him a bowl of rice. He suddenly realized that he had been wrong to be an ascetic. Life was too harsh. So he ate his rice, drank water and bathed in the river. He said people should not go to extremes. He called this the Middle Way.
- One night, Siddhartha sat under a tree. He meditated, and his mind became calm and still. Soon he saw everything that had happened in the universe. Siddhartha now understood why people suffer. In that moment, Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha.He began teaching others. Ascetics became his first followers. Women also joined his community of followers. For those who joined him, only one thing was important. It was the desire to reach enlightenment.For the rest of his life, Buddha taught others the Dharma. That is the name given to the teachings of the buddha. He wanted to help people become enlightened. He believed in peace. He died when he was 80 years old.Buddha is one of the most important people in history. He had a big effect on other religions, books and ideas around the world.
