  • As a colonist, the Stamp Act made me and the others very upset! We had already been hit with three major taxes:1) Sugar Act (1764) - levied new duties on imports of textiles, wines, coffee and sugar2) Currency Act (1764) - caused a major decline in the value of the our Colonial paper money3) Quartering Act (1765) - colonists had to provide food and lodging to British troops.
  • Parliament wanted to raise funds to pay off debts and defend the new American territories that were won as a from the French as a result of the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763). The British government passe the Stamp Act in 1765 in which a direct tax on all printed materials for commercial and legal use in the colonies, including newspapers, marriage licenses, pamphlets to playing cards and dice.
  • The French and Indian War won't pay for itself... Colonists need to pay a tax on all paper goods. Did I mention dice and playing cards are taxed too?

  • Virginia House of Burgesses adopted Patrick Henry's Stamp Act Resolves. The resolves stated that Americans possessed the same rights as the English including the right to be taxed only by their own representatives. It specified that Virginians should not pay taxes unless it was voted on by the Virginia House of Burgesses. It added that anyone in support of Parliament taxing Virginians should be considered an enemy of the colony. The House of Burgesses adopted four of the resolutions.
  • The colonies may be able to free themselves from the Stamp Act after all!
  • Sameul Adams formed the Sons of Liberty. In Boston, MA - August 1765, the Sons of Liberty hung an effigy of Andrew Oliver, the stamp act distributor & destroyed Stamp Act Headquarters as well.

  • The British Parliament passed the Declaratory Act in 1766 that accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act.The colonies no longer paid the stamp tax but the Declaratory Act stated that Parliament's taxing authority was the same in America just like in Great Britain. However, the colonists still felt that Parliament didn't have the right to tax them. This upset for 10 years gave rise to the Revolutionary War and, ultimately, American independence.
