April 9th, 1865, marked the ending of the Civil War for Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Virginia.
It was sunrise at Appomattox on April 9th, General E. Lee was still stuck on his belief that the war wasn't over just yet.
The only remains from the Confederate cavalry were 8,000 men from Maj, General John B, Gordon's Second Corps, along with Fitzhugh Lee.
The Confederate cavalry lined up west of the Appomattox Court House for battle.
Robert E. Lee was hoping for a thin line of Union cavalry ahead of him so he could smash through them easily, get rations, and supplies.
Grant had thwarted Lee's plans for a week (Lee's plans to turn south). He actively tried to surround Lee's forces and his movement.
After everything Grant did, his forces were finally ahead of Lee at Appomattox.
Lee was in the middle of the fight, the Cavalry and Gordon's Second Corps were readying for battle west of the village.
Lee's headquarters were east of the village. The group that were east guarding the rear was the First Corps and Third Corps of the ANV.
(with United States Colored Troops being included, who were marching most of the night to block the way).
(Lee knew his war was over).
Lee's hope of moving his army before Federal reinforcements arrived were crushed by the arrival of thousands of Union infantry.
The time was 8:00 AM, Gordon had his men retreat toward the village, Fizhugh Lee had his cavalry flee west.
