- While the world wastes about 1.4 billion tons of food every year, the United States discards more food than any other country in the world: nearly 40 million tons — 80 billion pounds — every year. Food waste makes up 40% of landfills.
- As you can see, the food industry wastes enormous amounts of food daily. Wasting food has irreversible environmental consequences: it wastes the water and energy it took to produce it.
- Additionally, food waste also generates greenhouse gasses in landfills — 11 percent of the world’s emissions—like methane, carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons, contributing to global warming.
