- Maui’s brothers were skilled fishermen and saw his abilities as very flawed. Unable to contribute to the daily catch he often stole his brother’s fish. As a result, Maui was excluded from their fishing excursions.
- The brothers returned without a catch. Maui took advantage and mocked their fishing failures, finding abundant fishing waters and their decision to, once again, exclude him. Reluctantly, the brothers took him fishing.
- Maui secretly took his “Manaiakalani”, a magical fishing hook. It was fashioned by the sacred heavens. The hook was a gift from his father, the “Keeper of the Heavens.” It was baited with the wing of his goddess mother’s pet bird.
- Unfortunately, the fishing proved poor. The brothers caught one shark. They were furious with Maui for sending them into limited fishing opportunities. Also, with themselves, for including him. They demanded the quotas that were promised.
- The magical fish hook caught the ocean floor.Significant time passed, when Maui felt a mighty tug. Thinking he caught a huge fish, he began to reel in his catch. For two days Maui placed enormous strength on reeling. To ensure a firm fishing line, he demanded that his brothers paddle harder and faster. He pushed them to focus forward.
- Without realizing, the ocean floor rose behind them. The floor revealed itself with peaks and valleys. With shear exhaustion and curiosity a brother looked backwards causing the line to slack and break. The land, with its many peaks and valleys, stopped rising. The exposed land formed new islands. The results was the birth of Polynesia.
