The Land of the Dead

- Go to the land of the dead, where Tiresias is.

- "Circe informs him that in order to reach home he must journey to the land of the dead, Hades, and consult the blind prophet Tiresias." Circe tell Odysseus this information and he and his men boards their ship.
- I will sacrifice my black lamb since it's the best!
- When they arrived at the land of the dead there was no sun and it was dark all the time. "The sun dipped, and all the ways grew dark upon the fathomless unresting sea."
- Odysseus and his men digs up a pit and pours their sacrifices down for the dead. "I spaded up the votive pit, and poured libations round it to the unnumbered dead: sweet milk and honey, then sweet wine, and last clear water; and I scattered barley down."
- Do not eat the cattle of the sun god!
- Odysseus kills his ewe and ram as a sacrifice to Tiresias. "I swore to sacrifice a black lamb, handsomest of all our flock. Thus to assuage the nations of the dead I pledged these rites, then slashed the lamb and ewe, letting their black blood stream into the well-pit."
- Odysseus comes upon Elpenor; he is told the story of his death. Elpenor begs him to burn his corpse and bury him under a heap of rocks, when he returns to Aeaea. "I pray, do not abandon me unwept, unburied, to tempt the gods’ wrath, while you sail for home; but fire my corpse, and all the gear I had, and build a cairn."
- Tiresias warns Odysseus to not eat Helios' cattle. If he and his men does eat the cattle they will be doomed. With this information, Odysseus resumes his journey. "You’ll find the grazing herds of Helios by whom all things are seen, all speech is known. Avoid those kine, hold fast to your intent,"
