- The novel starts off with Holden Caulfield telling the reader that he has been kicked out of school- leaving holden preparing to leave Pency without telling his family and fighting with his roomate.
- Holden then secretly goes to his home town of New York City and takes a taxi to a cheap hotel to spend a few days before winter break begins and he can go home.
- Holden goes out to multiple bars and has a rather bad time- spiraling into an even more hateful attitude and claiming everyone around him a "phony".
- The next day holden goes on a date with Sally who is a pretty girl but holden finds her phony, as he does with most people. He begs her to run away with him but she says no, making holden storm out and showing Holdens lack of rationality.
- Holden sneaks into his home to visit Phoebe his 10 year old sister who he loves. She claims he hates everything when he explains why he got kicked out of school and he leaves borrowing her Christmas money and giving her his red hat.
- Holden decides he needs to run away and meets phoebe for a goodbye but she begs him to take her with him, suitcase in hand. He angrily tells her no bringing her to tears.
- In reaction to her crying holden walks to the park- knowing Phoebe will follow. He gives her a ticket to the carousel and cries tears of joy watching his sisters childlike happiness on the ride.
- At the end of the book Holden is in a hospital after his mental break and is feeling more optimistic about the new school he is going to and overall about life.
