  • Let's discuss about the Hunters and Gatherers!!!
  • They were nomadic groups that harnessed the use of fire, developed intricate knowledge of plant life and refined technology for hunting and domestic purposes as they spread from Africa to Asia, Europe and beyond.
  • A hunter-gatherer is a human living in a society in which most or all food is obtained by foraging (collecting wild plants and pursuing wild animals).
  • So who were the Hunters and Gatherers?
  • They depended greatly upon the local environment; foraging strategies have included hunting or trapping big game, hunting or trapping smaller animals, fishing, gathering shellfish or insects, and gathering wild plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, tubers, seeds, and nuts. Most hunter-gatherers combine a variety of these strategies in order to ensure a balanced diet.
  • Are you curious to know what they looked like or how they lived?
  • Yes we are!!!!!!
  • That's right class! Here are some pictures of Neanderthals from 400,000 to 40,000 years ago !
  • Let's take a trip back into history!!!!
  • Year 2000
  • Poof!!!!!!
  • Hi I am YaohWelcome to Year 200,000.
  • Historians and have depicted us differently based on the epoch
  • Now to answer some of your questions:As you can see the early Gatherers and Hunters are described as having-Black hair- Narrow eyes&-Brown skin
  • and here are some homo-sapiens from 200,000 years ago
  • What was life like for the gathers and hunters?
  • we are a nomadic people. We use mobility as a survival strategy. Moving to find food or escape danger
  • the earliest hunters used more simple technology and often scavenged for food but with more improved technology, larger animals were hunted
  • With the introduction of spears at least 500,000 years ago, hunter-gatherers became capable of tracking larger prey to feed their groups. The picture below shows a group of hunters hunting a mammoth
  • The men were responsible for hunting and the women did most of the gathering
  • Our diet included various grasses, tubers, fruits, seeds and nuts.
  • We are egalitarian by nature, scraping up enough food to survive and fashioning basic shelter for all. Division of labor by gender became more pronounced with the advancement of hunting techniques, particularly for larger game. The hides from animals are very valuable. We use it carry water and food.Along with cooking, controlled use of fire fostered societal growth through communal time around the hearth.
  • The early hunter-gatherers used simple tools. During the Stone Age, sharpened stones were used for cutting before hand-axes were developed, marking the onset of Acheulean technology about 1.6 million years ago.Controlled use of fire for cooking and warding off predators marked a crucial turning point in the early history of these groups.
  • We live in impermanent shelters established in caves, like the one behind me and in other areas with protective rock formations, as well as in open-air settlements where possible. The hides from animals are used as floor covering over the cool damp earth and hung over the opening of caves to keep cold air out
  • so what are your houses like?
  • It' gathering time for me guys!! I will see you soon

  • They soon started to cut down trees to build houses
  • In order to be able to care for the plants, especially during the dry season, the early men had to settle in one place
  • They planted crops such as cassava, nuts, an edible roots and hunted animals like bisons and mammoths
  • With the beginnings of the Neolithic Revolution about 12,000 years ago, when agricultural practices were first developed, some groups abandoned hunter-gatherer practices to establish permanent settlements that could provide for much larger populations
  • With favorable conditions supporting permanent communities in areas such as the Middle East’s Fertile Crescent and the domestication of animals and plants, the agriculture-based Neolithic Revolution began approximately 12,000 years ago.
