  • Oh well, I have a lot of information on the Bengal Famine. I can help you with that.
  • Hey Reena! What are you doing here?
  • Hey Rahul! I actually got a project about writing about the Great Bengal Famine of 1943. So I am here to collect some information about it.
  • That's a great idea! Let's get right onto it.
  • Haha! Guess what? I read about this topic two days ago! You know what? Let's share information of our respective topics with each other, this way, we both will be able to quickly complete our homework.
  • Oh really? That's great! What is your project, by the way?
  • 3.8 million!? But what was the cause of this famine occurring in the first place?
  • And you know what? An estimated of 2.1 to 3.8 million Bengalis died due to this famine.
  • Bengal Famine occurred in the Bengal province of British India in the year 1943, during World War II.
  • Many people think it's because of the drought that occurred in the province at that time. But studies have shown that the famine did not occur because of any drought. Rather, it occurred because of the failure of the British government's policies.
  • Then British policy lapses such as prioritising distribution of vital supplies to the military, civil services and others in order to prepare for Japanese invasion, as well as the government's failure to halt rice exports or seek relief supplies from elsewhere resulted in the occurrence of this disaster.
  • A cyclone in October 1942 resulted in a reduced rice harvest, which put pressure on the following year's crop. Many subsistence farmers and their families were forced to eat rice reserved for planting.
  • There was a rapid increase in the French population between the years 1715 and 1789, where the population went from 23 million to 28 million. Now as the population increased, the demand for food increased as well.
  • The production of food was not keeping pace with the increasing demand, nor were the fixed wages of the labourers keeping pace with the increasing prices. All this led to the crisis.
  • Well, it's about the subsistence Crisis of France in the 18th Century.
  • Alright, now let's talk about the French subsistence crisis. Subsistence crisis was something that kept occurring quite frequently in France of the Old Regime.
  • The Subsistence Crisis also resulted in the death of hundreds and thousands of people. It was also a cause for the great French Revolution, as it created a feeling of hatred towards the ruler.
  • This Subsistence Crisis led created a distress among people as they had to struggle to get their basic need like bread.
  • Women had to wait in long lines, after which they agitatedly entered the baker's shop to get bread.
  • Alright, thanks Reena! That was some really great information that I can use to complete my project.
  • I am really glad I was able to help you! Thanks to you too, for helping me out with my project.
