  • Our story begins on a field as long as the eye can see. A young, black man works hard everyday in this field. From sun up to sundown, this man works. His name is Frederick Douglass and he is a slave.
  • On this field, there was a slave breaker named Covey. His job was to make sure the slaves behaved. He was very brutal and rude. Sometimes, he whipped slaves because in his eyes, they were less than animals.
  • Far away, Frederick's mother fell ill and died. He had only seen her five times in his life, so not once did tears come from his eyes. Not once did he mourn.
  • Back in the field, Douglass was painfully enduring another brutal beating. Covey hit him until the blood ran, red, hot, and thick down his spine. "This is what you deserve, slave, how dare you rest from your work?" Covey scolded. Frederick only groaned, as the whip landed on his back again. Slap!
  • Tired of the work and vicious beatings, Frederick decided to run away and heads towards the woods. Suddenly, someone walked out in front of him. It was a fellow slave, the kind and charismatic Sandy. Frederick told him what happened. Sandy gave him a root, with supposed magical powers.
  • Frederick returned to the field, reasoning that Covey wouldn't come near him as long as he had the root. It worked, for that day at least, but the next day Covey was in a bad mood. He grabbed his whip and walked towards Frederick. Frederick was confident with the root though, and when Covey raised the whip, he was ready. Not to endure the pain, but to fight.
