  • Background
  • Eww, look at those black eyes and black hair, what a loser
  • Conflict
  • WE DON'T SERVE JAPS
  • Rising action
  • Mitsi Kashino is a young Japanese girl who lives in America before the breakout of WWII. She goes to school bullied by the locals who are in the same school as her. As the wave of anti-Japanese sentiment arrives, racism starts to flow all around America. And poor Mitsi was one of the victims.
  • Solution
  • World War II broke out soon after. Mitsi, her parents and her dog, whose name is Dash, got kicked out of their homes. Mitsi and her family were forcefully sent to incarceration camps. Dash was separated from Mitsi, well, in this case, Mitsi was separated from most things as she knew it.
  • Conclusion
  • While Mitsi's dad contributed to the war, Mitsi's mom would work at the camp. Mitsi's mom would sell flowers, cloth and support Mitsi. Mitsi finds some friends and communicates with the camp neighbors. She tries her best to help out her roommates by buying food and being a "delivery man". The camp was cold and crowded, but Mitsi found it peaceful at night. She always slept early, before all the people working comes back.
  • Personal reaction/ reflection
  • Through weeks and months and years of tough times, the war finally ends. Mitsi and her family gets sent back to their original homes in America and continued the life she used to have. The train ride back was terrible, but Mitsi soon got back home and reunited with Dash. She switched to a new school with new sets of friends.
  • Mitsi goes back home and starts a life somehow different but also somehow the same as her past life. She also understood the importance of family and now cherishes the times she gets to spend with her beloved dog. She gets a new set of friends who are much nicer and classmates that won't bully her. The bullies from her last school also wrote letters apologizing.
  • This story about war, love and loss lets me understand the importance of family and friendship. I have learnt that I should cherish the things I have now before they're gone. I also realized that there are people living in situations so much worse than mine and that I should do my part in helping them. I recommend this book to everyone as it displays such a positive message that I think everyone should know.
