Our story begins when a man named Haden Edwards, was granted LOTS of land! His contract was to settle 800 familys, and luckily he was set up right next to Stephen F. Austin's grant!
However when he finally made it to his land, it came to his attention that people had already settled there! This was the start to conflict in his land.
Edwards wanted everything to go in favor of the new settlers because they were his but the old settlers wouldn't leave with out a fight. So Edwards put in place a set of rules/laws, one of which was; you have to present him proof of you improving the land in order to stay.
I now see you have done good work, you now have control of your land.
Thank You!This guy thinks he controls me...ha!
The Mexican Government quickly realized that Haden was favoring the new settlers, and was not happy with his choices in the matter. So it was decided that they would revoke his emprisarioship.
A group of new settlers arrested him, to get him away fro the mexican government, but before long Mexico was onto them.
That same group declared there own republic right inside of Mexico! They named there land, The Republic of Fredonia, and even made their own flag.
But like the last time, Mexico quickly caught up to them and a battle broke out, starting the eventual death of the Republic of Fredonia.
Haden ended up leaving to go get help from the United States, and while he was away he left his brother Benjamin in charge.
Banjamin soon realized that help was not coming, and fled, and in doing so ended the Fredonian Rebellion.
But this wasn't quite the end, because Mexico won this battle, but it uncovered some tense relations between the government and settlers. And it wouldnt be long before Texas gained its independance.
