  • I need to find out what happened to Jun.
  • That name is not to be spoken here.
  • What happened to Jun?
  • Patron Saints of NothingBy: Randy Ribay
  • Hi, I'm Jun's cousin Jay. Are you Reyna?
  • Can I ask you some questions about Jun and his death?
  • Yes, I am.
  • Jay Reguero graduated high school and was set to attend the University of Michigan when his family received news that his cousin Jun had died. Jay asked questions, but no one would give him any answers, so he convinced his parents to let him go to the Philippines to see his relatives and find out what happened to Jun.
  • Jun was always a good kid, but it is easy to go down the wrong path. We all loved him and will always love him.
  • When he arrived, his uncle would not tell him anything about his cousin's death, so Jay had to do some investigating of his own. He learns from Jun's sister that Jun was kicked out of the house because his dad caught him with weed. Jay accuses his uncle of getting Jun arrested since his uncle is a police officer, so then his uncle sends him to his aunt's house a day early.
  • At his aunt's house, Jay learns that Jun stayed with his aunt after he got kicked out, and he met a woman and fell in love with her. Jay also learned that Jun used drugs and sold them because he was desperate for money, but at heart, he was a good kid.
  • Jay returns to his uncle's home and tells his family the truth about Jun. Jay had believed that his search for the truth would bring Jun's memory to justice, but it has instead damaged his view of Jun. But, his cousin Grace convinced him to host a funeral ceremony for Jun in their backyard so that everyone may say their final good-byes.
  • I truly enjoyed this book, especially the chapter where Jay sits at the beach watching the waves and compares his life to his cousin Jun, noticing how much harder, more complicated, more challenging Jun's life was than Jay's. This had me thinking about how people come from all different backgrounds and how the many things they go through determine who they are as people. I strongly recommend this book.
