  • Cuba, 1519
  • I would be honored sir! Thank you!
  • Hello Mr. Cortes. I am the governor of Spain and I hope that you will be able to travel to mexico to explore a tribe that lives there
  • No! Don't go! Stop! Come back! It's not a good idea!
  • Sorry! I must pursue this! I need to go!
  • Why don't we make settlement here? It is a vacant area and it will give us time to build our forces and gather allies.
  • Mexico, 1519
  • Hello. I am Hernan Cortes and I wish to become your ally in order to abolish the Aztec Empire
  • Cortes searched for the Tlaxcalans to make them their allies and after two weeks of disagreement, the Tlaxcalans finally gave in
  • Hernan Cortes was born in Spain. He decided to move to Cuba in order to become more successful and well known. The Spanish governor heard of his talents and asked him to take an expedition to go and conquer a wealthy Indigenous tribe located in Mexico.
  • How do we know we can trust you? Attack him!
  • In Aztec tradition, if a person wears the clothing of a god, they are considered that god, but in human form.
  • Cortes sailed with 11 boats, 16 horses and 500 men. Just before he left, the Spanish governor decided he had second thoughts about the expedition. Cortes left anyway to pursue his mission.
  • Sir! I have heard rumours about other people coming to Tenochtitlan! What should we do?
  • When Cortes arrived, he sailed along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He arrived in a vacant area which he claimed to be his own city. Him and his crew made a settlement there and lived there for a while. They gathered several Indigenous allies and began creating strategies to be able to take down the Aztecs.
  • Hello. My name is Hernan Cortes. We have come to explore your tribe
  • Yes. Come in. I am sure you will feel very welcome here.
  • What if he really is the god? I must treat him and his people well.
  • At this point Cortes had already established several Indigenous allies, but went for the Tlaxcalans because they were the Aztecs rival tribe. After they became allies, the Tlaxcalans shared everything with the Spanish. Although they were poor, they had fierce warriors that the Aztecs valued. The Spanish were ready to enter Tenochtitlan.
  • Moctezuma II was the leader of the Aztec tribe. He had heard about people who were coming to his city, and decided to give them gifts to be able to see if they were gods.
  • Send them gifts to determine if they are gods. Include the clothing of Quetzalcoatl.
  • Cortes wore the clothes as gifts, not realizing its significance. Now Moctezuma was debating whether he was a god or not. Cortes and the Spaniards entered Tenochtitlan without a fight. Moctezuma took them in like royalty, because he was worried that he really was a god.
