  • ERAS IN TEXAS HISTORY
  • Made By: Anshul P.
  • Today, we know that europeans came to our land for multiple reasons. The first three are the 3 Gs. Gold, Glory, God. Europeans came here with a trip going to India and ended up finding this land with lots of gold, and quickly extracted it. European explorers wanted honor, to show their dominance over other explorers and to honor themselves before their country's monarchy or leader. Europeans believed there was only one religion, Christianity, so they had another mission- conversion. Another reason was the terrain and climate. They came to a Texas with lots of land, rivers, and milder cimate.
  • AGE OF CONTACT
  • The Civil War and Reconstruction period really shaped Texas. Texas had only been part of the U.S for 15 years before it was drawn into the Civil War. On March 2, 1861 Texas seceded to the Confederacy. Although only 1/4 of Texans at that time supported slavery the voting margin was still huge by about 3/4 of Texans voting for secession. The impact Texas had on the Civil War, was the fact that most Texans wanted to protect civil rights, for the Love of Texas, and to preserve slavery. TExans had just gained independence from Mexico, and Texans were enjoying their lifestyle so, they had to protect those rights. The Texans had loved their state so, they felt as if joining this war would complete their love for this state. Texans business was farms, and losing slaves meant they were out of business, so they also had to preserve slavery. As far as reconstruction goes, Texas had lost the war, so the Confederacy had no choice but to let slaves go and make a better state.

In a small time, the population on Beaumont quickly grew from 10,000 to 50,000! It was not all good. The oil boom had taken its toll on the environment by contaminating groundwater and wells with oil. Politics had also changed. Politicians fought over regions of oil and this caused many issues.
