  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling. One of the themes of Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is that fear and suspicion can be destructive. The characters in the story demonstrate this in many ways, one example is how Charlie shot Pete VanHorn, Woman: You killed him. You shot him dead . This shows how fear and suspicion can be destructive, because when Charlie was suspicious that Pete VanHorn was a monster he shot him out of fear. Another example is when people started accusing Steve of talking to aliens all because he was working on a radio set. Don: Myra's talked about how there's been plenty of nights you spent hours down in your basement workin' on some kinda radio or something. Well none of us have seen that radio. This shows how quick they are to jump to conclusions because of fear. There was also an incident when the power went out except for Less Goodman's car, which started on its own. People thought that was suspicious and turned on him. Don: Maybe you better tell us. Nothing's working on this street. Nothing. No lights, no power, no radio. Nothing except one car. Yours. This shows how quick to accuse the people are and how they are so desperate to put the blame on others. In conclusion, the theme of Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is that fear and suspicion can be destructive and the charactars shows this in many ways.
