- Matthew's mother opened his report card and saw that he received low grades.
- All F' s really? You're just a lazy ungrateful kid.
- She had spent hundreds of dollars on tutoring and felt like it was a waste now.
- How can you be so stupid. I wasted all this money just for you to fail.
- She took away all of Matthews priveleges
- I'm taking all your technology away because it's distracting you!
- She was so angry that she just assumed that Matthew wasn't trying anymore in school and didn't care. She attributes his behavior to his character without taking into account the other factors that are affecting him.

- You don't care about why I am doing bad. All you care about are my grades.
- What she doesn't realize is that Matthew is depressed because of his parent's divorce.

- I haven't been able to focus in school because of you and dad's divorce.
- Instead of asking why this is happening she punishes him.

- Matthew feels like his mother is being very harsh and that his emotions aren't being validated
- He feels like he can't open up to her without being judged.
- Overall he feels alienated. This sets a wall between their relationship.
