- *Person Vs. Person*This is the moment that causes the rest of the moments in the story to occur. After Cole brutally attacks Peter, the consequence given to him by the Circle Justice is a year-long banishment to a remote Alaskan island. The island is where Cole's character development begins.
- You're a dead man! (Mikaelson 7)
- *Person Vs. Nature*This sets up the most important event in the story: Cole getting attacked by the Spirit Bear. Cole is agitated by the bear's lack of fear for him and tries to attack it. This oobviously does not end well for Cole.
- I ever see you again, you're dead! I'll teach you to be afraid of me! (Mikaelson 53)
- *Person Vs. Society*In this scene, Cole wants to go back to the island, but the Keeper of the Circle Justice does not want him to. He broke his contract with the circle, and they no longer trust him. This scene shows Cole, his mom, the keeper, and Edwin. Edwin manages to convince the Circle Justice to let Cole return to the island, without sponsored supplies or help. This drives the plot into the second half of the novel.
