  • Penelope speaks to the men for what they have to accomplish for them to marry her.
  • Shoot the bow perfectly and you will become my husband.
  • Odysseus, disguised as an old beggar, goes to his trustworthy servants to enlist.
  • ¨ ´Now Penelope sank down, holding the weapon on her knees and drew out her husband´s great bow out, and sobbed and bit her lip and let the salt tears flow´ ¨ (21. 6-20).
  • Odysseus wants to try the bow, the insecure men refuse, Penelope insists he may try.
  • May I try the bow?

  • ¨ ´She approached the suitors, and near a pillar of the solid roof she paused, her shining veil across her cheeks, her maids on either hand and still, then spoke to the banqueters: ..Stand up, then: we now declare a contest for that prize. Here my lord Odysseus´ hunting bow. Bend and string it if you can. Who sends an arrow through iron axe-helve sockets, twelve in line?   • Odysseus is about to shoot the bow, the men are scared he may show them up.
  • ¨While the suitors are busy with the bow, Odysseus- still disguised as an old beggar- goes to enlist the aid of two of his trusted servants, Eumaeus, the swineherd, and Philoetius, the coward ¨ (Fitzgerald, 404).
  • Odysseus shoots the bow perfectly, the men are shocked.
  • ¨ ´Odysseus the beggar asks if the suitors if he might try the bow. Worried that the old man may show them up, they refuse, but Penelope urges them to let Odysseus try´ ¨ (Fitzgerald, 405).
  • No! You´re youŕe going to break that back.
  • ¨ ´And Odysseus took his time, turning the bow, tapping it, every inch for borings that termites might have made while the master of the weapon was aboard. The suitors were now watching him, and some jested among themselves´ ¨ (21. 94-99).
  • ¨ ´...So effortlessly Odysseus in one motion strung the bow. Then slide his right hand down the cord and plucked it, so the taut gut vibrating hummed and sang a swallow´s note. in the hushed hall it smote the suitors and all their faces changed´ ¨ (21. 110-115).
