- At the beginning of El Deafo, we are introduced to our main character CeCe Bell who is a deaf girl starting a new life in a new school.CeCe has a loving mom and dad and 2 siblings Ashley and Sarah along with her best friend named Emma. CeCe also fantasizes about being a superhero named El Deafo!!! She is an introverted girl and is often afraid of being judged for her disability. Nevertheless, CeCe goes to school hoping to find what she wants most a TRUE FRIEND!!!

- One day when Cece was young she didn't feel good and was not acting like her fun self. She was diagnosed with meningitis. Cece was later cured with treatment. But once she went home she realized she couldn't hear and was sent to the hospital again where she found out she won't be able to hear without a hearing aid.

- When CeCe goes to school she grew apart from Emma and met a girl named Laura. Laura automatically wants to be friends with CeCe. As the two girls grow closer, CeCe starts to notice Laura acting more and more toxic. Laura starts to get possessive over CeCe and would get mad when others talk to her. She would also put down CeCe by saying "you're not good" or "Mine is better.' As this behavior got worse CeCe finally started to distance herself from Laura.

- As CeCe experienced losing a friend and a toxic friendship she started to give up on friendship. But that was before she met Martha. Martha is a girl that is 1 year younger than CeCe and lives across the street. Martha never judged CeCe because of her hearing and instead helped her. One day as CeCe and Martha were playing, CeCe hurt her eye and had to go to the Hospital. Martha thought it was her fault and distanced herself from CeCe.
- Mike Miller is the new boy that moved into CeCe's and Martha's neighborhood. As soon as CeCe saw Mike she took a deep liking to him. Martha knew CeCe liked Mike so she decided to bring them closer. One time she did this was when she asked Mike if she and CeCe could jump on his trampoline then Martha left so CeCe and Mike can be alone. Mike also defended CeCe when she was bullied and made the bully say sorry. Eventually, Mike and CeCe become the best of friends.
- At the end of El Deafo, CeCe and Martha reunite and become best friends again. Martha learns about CeCe being a "superhero" and agrees to be El Deafo's sidekick. The two girls grow up together, always by each other's side, and helped each other no matter what. CeCe is also not afraid to tell everyone she's deaf because of Martha and her family by her side. And that is where the story of El Deafo ends.
