- We moved to USA because Senegal is passing for a civil war for 30 years. My husband got shot on the legs before we move, that's why he is crippled and we decided leave here.
- Hi, my name is Abayomi. These is my husband Jawari and my dauther Aina. We are refugees, and our history start on Senegal.
- Jawari was a teacher in Senegal, and taught underprivileged young people, convincing them to fight for their rights. But after being accused of influencing young people in demonstrations and having his leg shot by the Senegalese army during a protest, we decided to leave our country.
- We ran away at night. We walked overnight to get to the border.
- There were 8 days on the high seas; We were crossing the Atlantic Ocean
- When we got there, we joined a group of refugees who were also fleeing on a ship, which had terrible conditions.
- When we arrived in the US, we disembarked from the clandestine ship. Some of the other illegal refugees who were with us were arrested. But we managed to get away.
- We had a lot of difficulty with the language. But we were advised that there were camps for a UN refugee agency (UNHCR) there.
- But despite that, we're out of work and we still don't have a place to stay.
