- 13 Rangatira write to the king - A letter was sent to King William IV by 13 Maori chiefs from the Bay of Islands.

- James Busby arrives - He was appointed as British Resident in New Zealand.
- 1835
- United Tribes' flag chosen - March 1834, at Waitangi, northern chiefs selected a flag design which became known as the United Tribes' flag.
- 1839
- Maori were concerned about#160; - lawlessness in Kororareka and France's interest in claiming NZ.
- He Whakaputanga declared - Some northern rangatira were brought together to sign the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand.
- More signatures added - It had grown to 52 signatures. This includes the signature of#160;Te Wherowhero, the chief of Waikato who would later become the first Maori king.
