  • "...Now that the big rumble was coming up and we would settle this Soc-greaser thing once and for all"
  • After the drive-in movies in chapter 3, Cherry and Marcia walk home with the greasers only to find that the violent boyfriends they had come to the movies with were driving up beside them "then the blue mustang was coming down the street again, more slowly" (44).
  • Should we make a run for it?
  • Before the rumble in chapter 8, Ponyboytalks about how the Socs and greasers are fighting, and there is constant violence between the two. Violence seems to be a re-occurring theme between the two social groups.
  • After what happened in the vacant lot where Johnny was jumped he is now scared to go outside because of the amount of violence in the Soc's and because of how badly he was hurt "But after the night of the beating, Johnny was jumpier than ever. I didn't think he'd get over it. Johnny never walked by himself after that" (34)
  • The violence the Socs show scares the greasers and it becomes a theme of hurting each other like when they get jumped it says "Johnny's hand went to his back pocket and I remembered his switchblade. I wished for that broken bottle (...) Johnny was scared to death. I mean it. He was as white as a ghost and his eyes were wild-looking" (54).
  • The night Ponyboy and Johnny get jumped and Johnny kills a Soc, the amount of violence that night created a climax for the story "We were really running away, with the police after us for murder and a loaded gun by our side" (62).
  • Even when the church burned there were still themes of violence but still heroic themes. "That jacket saved you from a bad burning, maybe saved your life" (94).
