- The story begins with Blanche, Joe and Eddie robbing a bank and escaping from the police who are chasing them, in the process splitting the money between the three of them and deciding where to hide until the cops stop looking for them.

- Eddie decides to rent a car and go to a nearby cottage where the owner, Wilma Pinch, is suspicious of him for having so much money when he is so young, here he also meets Cal Dexter, a writer who will be his neighbor while he is staying.
