- Hi I’m squeaky i love running so much, I am just a normal black girl that has a brother called Raymond and I live in Harlem if you wondering from where I got my name squeaky it’s because they have squeaky voice,Since I was younger I had to take care of my brother Raymond he’s not perfectly fine Because of that A lot of people like to run their mouth if anybody has anything to say to Raymond, anything to say about his big head, they have to come by me And I don’t believe in standing around with someone in my face doing A lot of talking I would rather knock you down and take my chances even if i am just a little girl.
- love my brother but sometimes after a rainy like to stop down of his Tight rope right into the gutter and slosh around getting his shoes and cuffs wet.Then I get it when I get home or sometimes if you don’t watch him he’ll get across the traffic then I have to go behind him apologizing to all the people sitting around trying to get some sun and getting all upset
- Sometimes Gretchen and her little sidekicks come over to me and my brother Raymond and have to run there little mouth a little too much, And I don’t play the dozens or believe in standing around with somebody in your face doing a lot of talking
- It’s awkward to me the treatment would make a very fine runner. Doesn’t he always keep up with me on my trots? And he surely knows how to breathe and count of seven because he’s always doing it at the dinner table.
- My mother thinks it’s a shame I don’t take part and act like a girl for a change you think my mother be grateful not to have to make me a white dress with a big satin sash and buy me no doll shoes that can’t be taken out of the box to the big Day Do you think I should be glad her daughter ain’t out there prancing around a maple getting the new clothes all dirty and sweaty trying to act like a fairy or whatever, whatever that is, which is, as far as I’m concerned, a poor black girl who really can’t afford to buy shoes and a new dress you only wear once a lifetime because it went with you next year
- As I get into place and I see that’s all Raymond is on Line on the other side of the fence, bending down fingers on the ground just like he knew what he was doing. I was going to yell at him but then I didn’t. It burns up your energy To holler. Every time just before I takeoff in a race I always feel like I’m in a dream the kind of dream you have when you’re sick with fever and feel all hot and weightless.
- ’m smiling to beat the band because if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tide, or even if I want, I can always retire as a runner and begin a whole new career as a coach with Raymond as my champion. And I look over and took it and wondering what’s a P stands for. And I smiled. Because she’s good, no doubt about it. Maybe she’d like to help me coach Raymond , At the end i smiled at Gretchen so did she and we ended with mutual respect for each other.
