- Slayt: 1
- Climax: Della goes over to Madame's hair salon and asks if she will buy her hair. Madame is a large, cold woman but agrees to buy her beautiful hair and gives her $20 in return. Della now has $21.87 and has enough money to buy a gift for her husband. The only problem is, what is she to buy? Della starts racking up every store trying to find the perfect gift, and eventually finds the perfect present, a very nice chain for his pocket watch.
- Slayt: 2
- Falling Action: When James Dillingham Young returns home he is shocked to see his wives missing hair. She is worried that he does not love her anymore because of his concerned reaction.
- Slayt: 3
- Resolution: Della gives him the chain for his pocket watch she bought him and he gives her the combs she's always wanted for her hair. The ironic thing is she sold her hair for his gift so she can't use the combs and he sold his expensive gold watch to buy her fancy combs so he cannot use the new chain. Either was they are both happy and love eachother anyways because it's the thought that counts!
