- When the slavery of African Americans ended, the United States government passed a law for people of color that was called separate but equal,. For buses there was a law that said that white people sat in front and people of color in the back. At the back of the bus, colored people entered at the front door to pay and then got off and had to get on at the back door.

- Parks sat in the middle seats, which blacks could use if no whites required it. When the bus got full , the driver ordered her, along with three other blacks, to give her seat to a young white man who had just gotten on. He hadn't even asked for the seat, Parks later said in an interview with the BBC. The others stood up, but she remained motionless. The driver, seeing that she was not moving, called the police and they arrested Parks.
