  • Thank you all for coming to the first Historical and Literary Leadership Conference. It is a pleasure to have you, King Edward and your ward, Tom Canty, from the book The Prince and the Pauper, as well as Machiavelli, 15th century writer of The Prince. I know we'll have a lot to discuss. My name is Catherine Janet, and I am a reporter for the Jupiter Gazette. I have a few questions about negative reports on leadership qualities you have shown throughout your lives.
  • Of course. I would be eager to clear up any confusion.
  • I would be happy to answer any questions about my work!
  • Thank you, I'll keep that in mind.
  • Thank you. I have two questions for you. One for the king and his ward, and the second for Machiavelli, though feel free to speak up if you have something to contribute to the other side.
  • Empathy definitely helps. Getting out among people, and connecting with them creates leadership that serves the people: as it should be.
  • No, it is not true. Empathy can be a valuable skill. By understanding the things my subjects face, I am able to deal more fairly with them. My travels helped me immensely, teaching me the value of service, empathy, and mercy.
  • Ok, first (Your Majesty and Tom): Is or isn't it true that empathy is a weakness for a leader to have?
  • Yes, it is necessary to understand the people you lead, because if you don't know the full extent of a situation you can't react to it properly.
  • That's a measure of a leader's concern only for their wellbeing, your Majesty. . . this isn't that.
  • Interesting. . . thanks for sharing guys. Now, Machiavelli: Would you say that the common adjective "Machiavellian", with it's negative connotation, accurately describes your advice in your book The Prince?
  • Excellent! I score you a 100/100 on the Mach scale.
  • Simply put, no, because my book was about life and death circumstances for the prince, and freedom and liberty cases for a nation. In each case the prince was trying to prevent strife, and lead well, even if it meant certain precautions, not dissimilar to the modern Emergency Powers I've heard exist even now. So, I'm simply telling the prince to lead his nation as best he can in times of strife by doing what he must to protect freedom and liberty, and in peacetime to ease up.
  • The Pleasure was ours. We are glad we could help.
  • Interesting. . . the media should hear of this! Thank you so much for coming, now if you would excuse me, I'm going to go get your words on the front page right now. . . PHIL! STOP THE PRESSES!
  • Already on it.
