- It was whaling, sugar and pineapples that first brought Pearl Harbor to America's Attention.At the whaling industry's peak in 1846, nearly 800 whaling vessels made port calls in the Hawaiian Islands, mostly U.S.-flagged ships, according to Navy history and heritage command.
- What Caused the Attack? (Pt. 2)
- The navy was ordered to send regular patrols around the islands to protect the commercial whaling ships from pirates or rival nations.
- What Caused the Attack? (Pt. 3)
- President Roosevelt moved the US Pacific Fleet from Canada to Pearl Harbor in 1939. This move was a threat to Japan, who wanted to expand in the pacific.
- The Attack
- Japan had an increased need for natural resources like oil, minerals and steel as their goals for expansion in Asia and the pacific increased.
- The United States also had an obvious interest in these natural resources, and in response to the Japanese aggression, the U.S. Congress placed restrictions on doing business with Japan. And, if that weren't enough, Japanese assets in the United States were frozen.
- The base was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese aircraft (including fighters, level and bomb divers, and torpedo bombers) in two waves, launched from six different aircraft carriers. Of the eight U.S. Navy battleships present, all were damaged, with four sunk.
