Öykü Penceresi Metni

  • Love, Hate and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed
  • Theme
  • '"The answer is simple. No.'"(11.51)
  • Theme Development #1
  • "'Well, it's a good hobby, anyway.'" (1.70)
  • Progress Check #3: ThemeBy: Paula Zertuche
  • Theme Development #2
  • "Instead I collapse to the floor, sobbing for Phil, for New York, for the dead, for everything we've lost. And for what I've learned: that hope is just a million shards of broken glass." (14.64)
  • An important theme in this novel is the negative result of restrictions. Throughout the novel, the reader can see Maya's character change as her parents add more and more restrictions. She simply wants to follow her dreams and choose her future, yet her parents disagree with her choices. They wish Maya would be a perfect Indian girl, but she doesn't want that. She merely wants to choose her future.
  • Theme Development #3
  • "My dad's words are like a punch to the gut. He can't mean them. This can't be real." (22.31)
  • The theme is first shown at Ayesha's wedding, when Maya's parents talk to Kareem's parents about her passion for film. Her aunt says she will someday become a Hollywood star, but her parents are quick to say it is only a hobby. The reader can also witness Maya's discomfort at her mom when she mentions Maya will attend the University of Chicago. Maya has applied and gotten accepted at NYU, yet her parents are not aware of this yet. In both instances, one can tell that so many restrictions on Maya's life have led her to make bold decisions regarding her future.
  • Thematic Solution
  • "And the world between us cracked because of the difference in how we understand that fundamental bond." (Epilogue.29)
  • Furthermore, this theme continues to develop as Maya's parents decide Maya is no longer permitted to attend NYU. Maya had been so happy after her parents agreed to let her go, and she is so disappointed by the idea that she can't achieve her goals because of a terrorist attack. Maya becomes extremely upset at her parents, and she barely talks to them. By constantly taking away important parts of her life, Maya's parents are threatening their relationship with her.
  • Lastly, this theme shows when Maya finally stands up to her parents and informs them she will attend NYU in the fall, without caring whether they agree or not. Her parents are outraged and her dad makes her choose between pursuing her dreams or her parents. Evidently, Maya chooses NYU and her father kicks her out and says she is no longer a daughter to them. Now, by restricting her daughter too much, her parents have completely destroyed any possible relationship or bond to her.
  • You've made your decision and now understand mine. As a daughter, you are dead to us. When you turn 18 in June, you will leave this house." (22.30)
  • The theme is resolved because Maya puts a stop to all her restrictions and decides to attend NYU without her parents approval. Her parents kick her out, and claim no relationship to her. So thanks to all the restrictions they put on her, they lead to having no bond to her whatsoever. It is terrible to think that they would rather have no daughter at all, over letting their daughter follow her dreams and chase her future.
