Something happens that causes them to go on an adventure. Odysseus is setting out for a battle at Troy

The hero is hesitant at first to go on a journey. He does not want to leave his family and sail to Troy; he knows it will be a long trip and he’s fatherly instincts do not want to leave his son.

The Ordinary World
However a helper arrives that will guide the hero through his journey. Odysseus is added by Athena who takes pity on him.

The Call to Aventure
After the war the gods became angry with the Greeks for their prideful ways; a great storm emerges and throws them off course. There is no way to avoid it, and they are cast into a new world.

On his way Odysseus is thwarted with many tests as he tries to travel back to Ithaca: Polyphemus, Circones, Lotus eaters, Lastrygonians, Sirens, Scylla Charybdis, and Cattle of the Sun God.
