- Lyddie is fighting against the freezing rain to continue to Lowell. However, she is forced to stop in the next village because of how severe it is. This demonstrates a person vs. nature conflict.
- Lyddie is debating with herself on the matter of Charlie, because she feels that the woman and her husband are getting too attached to him. She feels that she has to make it clear that Charlie belongs to her. This is a struggle within her.
- Diana and others are against the rest of society on the matter of better working conditions. They are protesting for their rights, which demonstrates the conflict of the protestors against society.
