- The main character, Bilbo Baggins was known for living a peaceful life not fond of going on any adventures and staying in his comfort zone.
- Conflict
- Bilbo hears a knock at his door meeting a Wizard named Gandalf. Gandalf has been on many adventures and is seeking out somebody to go on his next. Gandalf asks Bilbo to join him however he proceeds to firmly refuse. Bilbo invites Gandalf over for tea the next day in order to be friendly but regrets his decision subsequently. Bilbo sees Gandalf engraving a mark at Bilbo's door.
- Refusal of the Call
- Bilbo finds several dwarves at his door letting themselves in as if they were invited. The dwarves start rummaging through Bilbo's food and start eating. Gandalf shows up soon after.
- Crossing the Treashhold
- Gandalf and the dwarves inform Bilbo that a dragon named Smaug had stolen a large sum of gold from them and they need Bilbo to help take it back. 
- We need help getting the gold back
- Bilbo refuses to go on the adventure once again.
- I am not going
- After much thought and a night of rest, Bilbo agrees to join the group on their adventure.
- I will join you
