While on an expedition, a group of sailors led by Captain Walton help a man named Victor, who was chasing after a strange looking man. Victor tells the sailors the story of why he is at sea, starting with his childhood.

A long time ago, Victor Frankenstein's father adopted a girl named Elizabeth, who Victor planned to marry. He grew up reading books about alchemy and eventually went to a college to learn more about science.

Victor becomes obsessed with the idea of creating new life. He takes parts of people and stitches them together, creating a Creature which he fears and rejects.

Now living alone in a forest, the Creature realizes how disgusting it looks and tries to hide. He learns how to speak from a nearby farming family that he stalks and eats berries from bushes, cooking them with sticks and stones that he gathers. He becomes angry at Victor for creating him, and searches for him to create another Creature.

The Creature flees across Europe with Victor chasing after him. Eventually, the chase leads to the Arctic Ocean, where Victor is injured and unwell. He is picked up by the sailors and later dies. Later, the captain enters the cabin where Victor died, and sees the Creature mourning.

After Victor refuses to create another monster, the Creature searches for him and swears revenge. On the wedding night of him and Elizabeth, Elizabeth is strangled to death by the Creature, who then flees to the mountains.
