- It is believed that Lord Shiva and Parvati themselves had sown the seeds of Paan in the Himalayanranges. No auspicious Vedic occasion moves ahead without a ritual involving Paan in it.Skanda Purana (ancient Hindu compendium), which dates back to the 6th century, scriptures like Charaka Samhita, ayurvedic books of Sushruta, Jataka stories, Mahabharat and KamaSutra has references to Paan .
- Many of the skeletons found in the Philippines, had a red colour on their jaws and these skeletons were dated around 3000 BC.
- 1292 A.D, Marco Polo [coromandel coast], 1350 A.D, Ibn Battuta (Arabian Traveler), Europeans and 1560 A.D, Garcia-Da-Orta (Portuguese physician)describes an amusing custom of eating paan after meals in India. Muhammad bin Tughluq and Shah Jahan (Mughal Emperor) were fans of paan.
- Betel leaves help in lowering high cholesterol levels, wound healing, overcoming depression, gastroprotective Activities and Improving oral health. It is an anti-cancer, diabetic, microbial, asthmatic and anti-malaria agent.
- Research conducted in 2013 by an international team of researchers found that certain compounds in the dainty Piper betel leaf have antibiotic properties too, which will help kill several pathogenic bacteria. Not only modern science it is an ayurvedic way of treatment.
- Traditions are not bad but they need to evolve constantly . But are we forgetting our traditions?
